Robert Kubica finished Rally Portugal, round five of the FIA World Rally Championship, in ninth position. The Polish driver scored his first points of the season after a faultless weekend on his return to WRC.
The former WRC 2 World Champion started the event by going fourth fastest in the curtain raising super special on a rallycross circuit in Lousada, before consistently running inside the top 10 for the whole weekend. By finishing ninth on a tricky, new roads in the north of Portugal, Kubica scored his first two points of the season.
The weekend proved to be a successful test both for the new-spec Ford Fiesta RS as well as Kubica’s RK World Rally Team. Focusing on reorganising his squad saw the Pole missing the previous round in Argentina.
Robert Kubica and his co-driver Maciek Szczepaniak will be back in action during the second weekend of June in Sardinia, before taking part in LOTOS 72th Rally Poland in front of their home fans on the first weekend of July.
Robert Kubica “Rally Portugal was a successful test for the entire RK World Rally Team. It confirmed that missing Rally Argentina to focus on reorganising the squad was the right call. Despite driving a new car on new stages we were able to keep a solid, consistent pace, avoiding any issues both on the road and in the service park. After a break of two and a half months I needed some time to rediscover the feeling behind the wheel, but it was a good weekend. Now we’ll keep working on improving the team ahead of Sardinia and our home event in Poland.
